Private Lessons
I teach private painting lessons in my studio. They're informal and are generally an hour or two once a week. They are tailored to what the student wishes to accomplish. I mainly work with adults but have given lessons to kids as well. I’ve taught absolute beginners as well as other artists. I never take on more than two students at a time, so scheduling is flexible.
I like to schedule a meeting before we commit to better understand the student's goals and to determine if I am a good match for what they’re hoping to accomplish.
My studio is located in downtown Cleveland in the Tower Press Building (there is free parking behind the building).
Student Testimonials
"I came to Mike about a year ago with a childhood love of drawing and an interest in painting. I basically started from zero. We’ve worked together intermittently because of the pandemic, but when I have been able to get into the studio, he has been so kind, encouraging, and supportive. It’s definitely changed how I look at painting and how I think about images. I came to him wanting to rediscover art, and I’ve come away with more confidence in reinvesting in my artistic journey. And now I have a small set up in my apartment for painting! Plus he’s so easy to talk to and he’s got a lot of great stories and he’s so great at giving constructive feedback on your work and where to take it next. I definitely recommend taking classes with him."

“Michael Greenwald is an art instructor who has the unique ability to provide a very specialized, custom designed curriculum for an art student who opens their heart and mind to learning, being critiqued and who is ready to do the work. From the moment I met Michael I knew we would be able to work together. He was easy to talk with and authentic, he listened and asked great questions to get to know me and not only "what" I wanted to learn but also "how" I wanted to learn; he was very sincere in his approach to understanding what would be important to me in my art lessons. That may have impressed me as the most important thing in our initial "instructor / student" relationship. We worked together for approximately 6 months and what I learned from Michael has not only renewed my love for painting, but it has also inspired me to go outside of my comfort zone and to believe in myself and what I can accomplish if I simply continue to paint, paint, paint! And the best thing is I made a wonderful new friend! I would highly recommend working with Michael if you can open your heart and mind to learning about yourself in the process of learning to paint.” -Karen
“Michael and I spent a great deal of time talking about our respective artistic journeys before picking one or two techniques that we would focus on learning over our series of lessons. He showed me how to safely and effectively integrate poured resin into my existing work with acrylics. There was room to explore and experiment in exciting new ways and an exciting new dimension was added to my work. Michael was a thoughtful sounding board during our sessions and I found our conversations enlightening. Michael met me as another artist and our lessons left me a little better equipped to express myself. I can highly recommend Michael as an extremely thoughtful and competent teacher.” -Andrew
