Cleopatra's Cat
This painting was created with 22 carat gold leaf and super high pigment black paint on a birch panel, encased in several layers of epoxy resin. 8"x8."
To my understanding this high pigment black paint (called Black 3.0) is the blackest black commercially available paint, absorbing up to 99% of visible light.
Artist Anish Kapoor owns the rights for the blackest black paint in the world for artist applications. That paint is called Vantablack and absorbs close to 100% of visible light, but only Anish Kapoor can use it.
This painting was made by slowly building up alternating layers of paint, gold leaf and clear epoxy resin. As the layers of resin and paint build an optical effect is created, magnifying the design and enhancing the colors. The painting's sense of depth is increased by the actual physical depth of the resin.
